Located near Washington, D.C.’s museums and historic sites, National Harbor in Maryland comes alive in spring when cherry trees bloom and outdoor festivals help shake off winter’s chill.
More than 200 Okame cherry trees line the waterfront at National Harbor, offering a scenic backdrop for promenades and family outings. From March 21 to April 12, the Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the arrival of spring with a variety of activities, including cherry blossom origami classes with Michiko Okuma at McCormick & Schmick’s on March 21 and at Grace’s Mandarin on March 22.

If you prefer to capture the blossoms on canvas, Muse Paintbar hosts themed paint-and-sip classes through April. Local restaurants and bars feature cherry blossom–inspired snacks and cocktails, while Potomac Water Taxi runs cherry blossom cruises that provide a peaceful way to view the trees and enjoy the pink illumination of The Capital Wheel and the Waterfront District.
“National Harbor has grown over the past 18 years and provides a variety of options for families to see and do,” said Deborah Topcik, senior director of marketing at National Harbor. “With eight hotels to choose from, more than 40 restaurants, outlet and boutique shopping, multiple entertainment venues and a range of outdoor activities, it’s a premier destination for a vacation or a weekend getaway. Because National Harbor is easy to navigate and highly walkable, it’s perfect for families and an ideal place to bring together multiple generations.”

Spring at National Harbor also brings a lineup of lively events. From March 12 to 22, the Garden Bros. Nuclear Circus showcases more than 60 performers from around the world, presenting daring stunts like the Globe of Death, human cannonball acts, aerial feats and comedic routines.
From March 27 to 29, the Water Lantern Festival transforms the waterfront into a glowing scene of reflection and community. Participants decorate lighted lanterns with messages of hope, love, unity and remembrance, then place them in a protected area on the water, creating a serene, luminous display.
Whether you’re seeking seasonal blooms, family-friendly entertainment, or a peaceful evening on the water, National Harbor’s spring programming offers a variety of ways to celebrate the season and make the most of the waterfront setting.
