KLM Welcomes Its First Boeing 787 Dreamliner: What It Means for Travelers

Boeing and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines marked the delivery of KLM’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal and growth strategy.

“We are very proud to welcome our first Boeing 787 Dreamliner today,” said Pieter Elbers, president and CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. “This aircraft represents a new chapter for KLM. Investing in our customers is a top priority, and this efficient airliner is a key part of that commitment. It reflects the dedication of our 33,000 KLM employees, who work every day to provide the best service for our customers.”

The delivery is part of a larger fleet plan across the Air France-KLM Group. In addition to this 787-9, the group has 19 more 787-9s and six 787-10s on order and will lease 12 additional 787s through AerCap. KLM plans to deploy its first 787-9 on the Amsterdam (AMS)–Abu Dhabi (AUH)–Bahrain (BAH) service, enhancing capacity and passenger comfort on that route.

The Dreamliner brings improved fuel efficiency, reduced noise, and enhanced cabin features that benefit both long-haul operations and passenger experience. For KLM, integrating the 787-9 supports network expansion while lowering operating costs and environmental impact compared to older aircraft.

As KLM incorporates the new type into its fleet, crew training, maintenance preparations, and route planning will ensure a smooth introduction. The airline’s broader order book and leasing arrangements indicate a sustained commitment to modernizing its long-haul fleet and meeting future demand with more efficient aircraft.
