Hydrogen-Powered Viking Neptune Launches Maiden Voyage

Viking Cruises celebrated a milestone anniversary by launching the elegant Viking Neptune, a new ship that advances the line’s sustainability efforts. The Viking Neptune debuts with a small hydrogen fuel cell system, the first of its kind in the cruise industry to be tested for onboard operations. This innovation complements Viking’s well-known design and passenger amenities while reinforcing the company’s environmental commitments.

The Neptune is the ninth vessel built to Viking’s signature small-ship design by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. It continues Viking’s focus on efficient, guest-centered ships while adding a prototype hydrogen fuel cell module that provides 100 kilowatts of power. That module is intended as a test bed for future, larger alternative low-carbon systems.

“We are especially proud to welcome this newest sister ship to our ocean fleet, as it also marks a significant advancement in testing hydrogen as a future fuel for our vessels,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking. “We look forward to welcoming guests on board the Viking Neptune next week. She is the 15th new ship we have added to our overall fleet this year, another significant milestone as we continue the celebration of our 25th anniversary.”

Viking and Fincantieri plan to continue exploring hydrogen technology, with additional ships incorporating hydrogen fuel cells scheduled for construction and delivery between 2026 and 2028. The experimentation aboard the Viking Neptune is an important step toward scaling alternative fuels and reducing carbon emissions across future fleets.

Like her sister ships, the Viking Neptune accommodates up to 930 guests in 465 staterooms, each with a private verandah. After inaugural sailings in the Mediterranean, the vessel is slated to join Viking’s long-haul programs, including the 2022–2023 Viking World Cruise. That itinerary sails from Fort Lauderdale to London, visiting 57 ports across 28 countries over 138 days.

The launch of the Viking Neptune demonstrates Viking Cruises’ approach to blending refined passenger experiences with practical, forward-looking environmental technologies. By trialing hydrogen power at sea, the line aims to inform broader industry efforts to adopt lower-emission propulsion and support a more sustainable future for ocean travel.
