Lincoln Center Reveals 2015–2016 Season Headliners and Highlights

It’s still more than six months until October, but tickets for the Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series sell quickly. This year marks the series’ 50th season, opening on Oct. 14, 15 and 17 with a three-concert exploration of Franz Schubert’s song cycles, performed by tenor Mark Padmore with pianist Paul Lewis. The season also includes two performances by the London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in what will be his final New York appearances as chief conductor; both concerts will feature pianist Yefim Bronfman.

Other season highlights include the U.S. debut of Anima Eterna Brugge and the Lincoln Center debut of Accademia Bizantina. The Emerson String Quartet will present three concerts in the spring, offering a chance to hear their celebrated blend of technique and interpretive depth. Soprano Christine Brewer and organist Paul Jacobs will appear together in a Voice and Solo Organ recital featuring works by Handel, Bach, Puccini, Franck and Gounod. Additionally, Gerald Barry’s opera The Importance of Being Earnest will receive its U.S. stage premiere as part of the Major New Opera Initiative, presented in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic.

The 50th season emphasizes both established masters and notable debuts, balancing orchestral showcases, chamber music and solo recitals. Concertgoers can expect a strong roster of international artists and ensembles, with programming that highlights canonical works alongside contemporary and rarely heard repertoire. Special engagements—like Padmore’s Schubert survey and Bronfman’s appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra—promise focused artistic statements that will draw attention from vocal, piano and orchestral audiences alike.

Chamber music offerings are anchored by the Emerson String Quartet’s spring performances, which typically feature a mix of classic quartet literature and inventive programming. Early music enthusiasts will appreciate the presence of Accademia Bizantina and Anima Eterna Brugge, ensembles known for historically informed performances that illuminate Baroque and Classical repertoire with fresh perspectives.

Solo recitals add further variety: Christine Brewer’s voice paired with Paul Jacobs’ organ work will span several musical eras and styles, from Baroque clarity to Romantic expressiveness and operatic lyricism. These programs aim to showcase both technical mastery and interpretive nuance, appealing to listeners who value vocal artistry and rich instrumental color.

The Major New Opera Initiative’s staging of Gerald Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest marks a noteworthy contemporary contribution to the season. Presenting a U.S. stage premiere in partnership with the New York Philharmonic underlines Lincoln Center’s commitment to supporting new and innovative operatic projects, while offering audiences the opportunity to experience modern opera alongside more familiar repertoire.

Overall, the Great Performers’ 50th season promises a diverse mix of performances across genres and formats. From large-scale orchestral concerts and acclaimed solo recitals to chamber music and premieres, the lineup aims to engage a wide range of classical music listeners. Given the popularity of these events, prospective attendees are advised to plan ahead and secure tickets early to avoid missing these high-profile performances.
