Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Taipei: Luxury Hotel in Zhongshan District

Arrival/Check-in: Arriving on a Tuesday evening via EVA Airways, I ran into a bit of traffic on the way to the city center. Without congestion, the trip takes about 45 minutes. The hotel conveys a formal, businesslike elegance. Staff in well-tailored traditional attire greeted me and completed check-in efficiently, then escorted me to my room while my luggage followed shortly after. (20/20)

Guest Quarters: The hotel advertises the largest guestrooms in Taipei, and my experience confirmed that claim. My executive suite featured a long mirrored corridor that opened into a small sitting area and the main bedroom, furnished with a king-sized bed, a flat-screen TV and three large windows framing views of Taipei 101. A second mirrored passage lined with closets led to an expansive marble bathroom with a deep tub overlooking the city, an in-bathroom LCD TV and a separate shower. The room’s muted palette and thoughtful layout created a calm, functional space for both work and relaxation. (12/15)

Services/Amenities: The hotel connects directly to an upscale shopping mall, convenient for guests who want nearby options without traveling far. On-site facilities include seven distinct restaurants, a full-service spa, a well-equipped fitness center and a stunning rooftop pool on the 43rd floor offering unobstructed views of the skyline and Taipei 101.

Each dining venue has its own character. For a lighter Chinese menu, I recommend lunch at the Shanghai Pavilion. The Marco Polo Lounge offers intimate seating ideal for couples, while the Yi Café serves an extensive buffet with a broad selection of Eastern and Western dishes.

Service staff deserve special mention. When I realized I had left my mobile phone on the plane, the concierge acted quickly: after providing my name, seat number and a description of the device, the phone was retrieved and delivered from the airport to my room within three hours at no charge. The Horizon Spa’s Swedish massage was excellent; the therapist also taught a few simple exercises to improve circulation during travel. (44/45)

The Experience: This property is exceptionally well suited to business travelers, particularly women traveling for work. It is centrally located, highly functional and refined, offering a level of comfort and luxury that supports both productive stays and restful downtime. (18/20)

Total Score: 94/100
