Starwood’s Expansion Into Africa: Markets, Hotels, and Opportunities

Starwood is expanding its presence in Africa with a new Sheraton hotel in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, scheduled to open in 2018. Sheraton Kigali will mark the brand’s 50th property on the continent as Starwood pursues aggressive growth across Africa, planning to increase its portfolio by more than 30 percent with roughly 15 new hotels over the next five years.

Located in the Gasabo district, the new hotel sits about seven kilometers from Kigali International Airport and is positioned near the green surroundings of Lake Nyarutarama and the Nyabarongo River wetlands. The property will feature 136 guest rooms and a full range of amenities, including a spa, an outdoor swimming pool, adjacent retail outlets, an all-day dining venue, a specialty restaurant and a lobby lounge for casual meetings and relaxation.

Designed to serve both leisure and business travelers, Sheraton Kigali will include generous meeting and event space along with a dedicated business center. These facilities aim to support conferences, corporate gatherings and social events, meeting the needs of Rwanda’s growing tourism and business sectors.

Starwood currently operates 37 hotels across 15 African countries and has announced plans to continue expanding its footprint across the continent. By 2015 the company expected to debut properties in markets such as Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Senegal and Mauritius, and the Kigali opening represents the next step in that broader regional strategy.

With its strategic location, modern amenities and business-focused facilities, Sheraton Kigali is positioned to become a key hospitality option in Rwanda’s capital, supporting the city’s development as a regional hub for tourism and commerce.
