Easily recognized by the red-lettered “Essex House” sign atop its roof, the hotel has been a Manhattan landmark since it opened in 1931 as Sevilla Towers. At the time, it stood among the tallest towers in the city and was one of the earliest examples of Art Deco architecture in New York.
