Virgin America is partnering with the City of San Francisco Animal Care and Control to transport Chihuahuas from San Francisco to the New York area. The airlift program aims to ease the overpopulation of Chihuahuas in California by relocating them to regions on the East Coast where small-breed dogs are in high demand, particularly among apartment dwellers.
Virgin America began working with SFACC to fly adoptable dogs to the East Coast in 2010. As the number of Chihuahuas in local shelters has continued to grow, the airline and the city have expanded their efforts. This marks Virgin America’s fifth airlift in partnership with SFACC.
“We face a significant overpopulation of Chihuahuas here in California,” said Rebecca Katz, director of SFACC. “Virgin America’s ongoing support in transporting these little dogs to the East Coast over the past several years has allowed us to place many into loving homes that might not have been available locally. We encourage Bay Area residents to visit local shelters if they are considering adoption.”
