Lark Hotels to Open Gilded-Era Luxury Hotel in Newport, RI

Lark Hotels pays tribute to Newport, Rhode Island’s Gilded Age with the May opening of Gilded, the newest boutique hotel in its New England collection of distinctive properties.

The hotel playfully reinterprets the extravagant style associated with the late 19th and early 20th centuries—when industrial magnates filled Newport with lavish mansions and grand social events—by blending that historic opulence with modern amenities. The result is a contemporary take on Gilded Age decadence that feels both luxurious and approachable.

Boston-based interior designer Rachel Reider drew on rococo, Beaux-Arts, and other period influences to craft interiors that mix ornate mirrors, lacquered surfaces, and gold accents with a fresh, contemporary sensibility. The palettes favor rich jewel tones and sumptuous fabrics that give each space a tailored, elegant look.

“We had a lot of fun capturing the essence of this opulent time period and reimagining it for the modern-day traveler,” Reider said. “I love rich jewel tones and luxurious fabrics, and Gilded was tailor-made for them.”

Beyond the richly appointed rooms and public spaces, the hotel offers playful nods to historic leisure activities. Guests can enjoy a billiards room featuring a black velvet and white lacquer pool table and unwind in a secluded courtyard that includes a croquet practice lawn—small touches that evoke the spirit of the era without feeling dated.

To mark its spring opening, Gilded is offering a special package for early visitors: guests who stay two nights during the first 20 days of May receive 20 percent off the nightly rate, two tickets to tour The Breakers, and a chilled bottle of Prosecco on arrival.

Gilded adds a fresh, stylish option for travelers seeking a boutique experience rooted in local history while offering the conveniences expected by today’s guests. With its thoughtful design, playful programming, and prime Newport location, the hotel offers a distinctive new way to experience the city’s celebrated past.
