Uber Appoints New CEO: What It Means for Riders and Investors

Ride-hailing company Uber has appointed a new chief executive officer, Dara Khosrowshahi, who joins from Expedia.

Khosrowshahi succeeds Travis Kalanick and had led Expedia as CEO since August 2015. He emerged as the chosen candidate after General Electric chairman Jeffrey Immelt withdrew from consideration.

The incoming chief executive inherits several significant challenges, including substantial quarterly losses and a corporate culture that has been criticized for issues such as sexual harassment allegations, driver dissatisfaction and reports of internal misconduct.

Before this appointment, Uber was overseen by a 14-person leadership group. In addition to his new role, Khosrowshahi serves on the boards of Fanatics Inc. and The New York Times Company.
