British Airways Launches Faster Way to Choose Seats Online

British Airways passengers can now use Avios to pay for in-flight seat selection. Previously, travelers without complimentary seat selection had to pay cash to reserve seats; the airline’s updated option lets customers use Avios to cover part or all of the seat fee.

Under the previous policy, British Airways Executive Club Gold and Silver members enjoyed free seat selection at booking, while Bronze members could choose seats free of charge from one week before departure. The new Avios redemption option is primarily aimed at Blue tier members, who until now typically paid for seat selection until check-in.

James Hillier of the British Airways Executive Club said the additional redemption choice expands how members can spend Avios. He noted it will be especially useful for Blue members and reinforces the value of collecting Avios through the Executive Club.

This update is one of several enhancements British Airways plans to roll out over the next five years to improve the passenger experience. Earlier in the year the carrier also introduced improved catering options, including full second meals on longer flights.

The Avios-for-seats feature gives travelers more flexibility when booking and managing seat choices. Members can now decide whether to spend Avios for certainty and preferred seating at the time of selection, or to wait and accept the complimentary options available by their tier closer to departure. The change aligns seat selection with other flexible Avios redemption opportunities already available for flights, holidays and experiences.

By allowing points to be applied to seat fees, British Airways provides an additional non-cash payment method that can make travel planning easier for frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike. It also increases the practical utility of Avios balances, letting members convert reward currency into tangible in-flight comfort and convenience.

For passengers who value specific seats — such as extra legroom, preferred rows, or family-adjacent seating — the ability to use Avios can simplify budgeting for travel and reduce out-of-pocket expenses. At the same time, members who prefer to conserve Avios can continue to use cash when that suits them better.

Overall, the change reflects a broader effort by British Airways to offer greater choice and personalization. With a combination of tier-based benefits and new Avios redemption options, the airline is aiming to make seat selection and other services more accessible and flexible for Executive Club members across all tiers.
