World Premiere: Exclusive First Look and Live Coverage

Lufthansa is introducing a new travel experience that blends greater comfort with affordability. The airline launched its Premium Economy cabin in November 2014 on the Boeing 747-8, and rolled it out across the long-haul fleet over the following year.

Positioned between economy and business class, Premium Economy delivers noticeably more space and upgraded amenities while remaining priced closer to economy. It is Lufthansa’s first entirely new travel class in 35 years, and the airline anticipated serving more than 1.5 million Premium Economy passengers annually.

The cabin’s seats are up to 1.2 inches wider than standard economy seats and offer roughly 3.9 inches of extra lateral space, giving passengers greater privacy with individual armrests and center consoles. Compared with economy, the seating provides about one-and-a-half times more personal space, and includes adjustable head and foot rests. Additional conveniences built into the seats include a bottle holder, an electrical outlet and enhanced storage compartments.

Premium Economy passengers receive upgraded services and amenities both on the ground and in the air. The baggage allowance includes two items, and passengers can purchase access to Lufthansa Business Lounges for an additional fee. Onboard service begins with a welcome drink and a bottled water, and travelers are provided with a quality amenity kit. Meals are offered from a menu and served on porcelain tableware. The in-flight entertainment system features an extensive selection of content, with each seat equipped with an 11- to 12-inch touch-screen monitor and a remote that doubles as a game controller.

The Premium Economy cabin is a distinct section located between business and economy cabins and accommodates between 21 and 52 seats depending on aircraft type. Lufthansa implemented the cabin across its fleet gradually, completing the rollout in 2015.

Beyond Premium Economy, Lufthansa planned a series of upgrades across all cabins and on the ground for 2015, including new first- and business-class cabins installed fleetwide and the introduction of approximately 7,000 new seats.

Lufthansa serves 253 destinations in 103 countries directly, with 17 gateways in North America. Through its partners, the network extends to more than 450 destinations across over 120 countries. The airline has been investing in both lounge infrastructure and onboard products, continuing a $150 million program to build or upgrade lounges worldwide and committing more than $3.6 billion to new onboard products and services by 2015.
