Experience the World’s Oldest Desert at andBeyond’s New Lodge

andBeyond has reopened its renovated Sossusvlei Desert Lodge on Oct. 16 after a 10-month refurbishment. Located within the NamibRand Nature Reserve—part of the ancient Namib Desert and Africa’s only certified Dark Sky Reserve—the lodge is designed to showcase the dramatic desert landscape and exceptional night skies. Architectural features such as floor-to-ceiling glass walls and retractable skylights above the beds maximize views and stargazing opportunities.

The guest suites provide spacious, refined comfort, each measuring roughly 1,400 square feet and offering panoramic desert views. Thoughtful amenities include a butler hatch with a solar-powered freezer stocked with ice cream and craft beer, cozy in-room fireplaces, artist easels, private verandas, outdoor showers, fire pits and plunge pools. The accommodations are equipped to keep guests comfortable and connected with the environment while providing privacy and luxury.

Beyond the suites, the lodge offers a variety of curated experiences that highlight the region’s unique geology and culture. Day trips to Deadvlei reveal its iconic, fossilized trees set against stark white clay pans and towering red dunes. Excursions to the famed Sossusvlei dunes—some rising to around 1,000 feet—allow for guided or self-guided dune walks, while aerial perspectives are available by hot air balloon. Evening programs include astronomer-led stargazing to take advantage of the reserve’s dark skies. Dining has also been expanded: guests can choose to eat in multiple settings, from shaded dining areas to picnics on the sand dunes or meals served in fairy circles. Menus emphasize local ingredients and traditional techniques, and an interactive kitchen gives visitors the chance to learn and try regional cooking methods.

Sustainability is central to the lodge’s operation. On-site water-bottling facilities and an active greywater recycling program—reclaiming more than 26,000 gallons each month—reduce waste and conserve resources. The lodge bottles water in recycled glass containers, eliminating over 45,000 single-use plastic bottles annually. Additionally, all cleaning products used on the property are fully biodegradable and environmentally friendly, reflecting the lodge’s commitment to minimizing its environmental footprint while offering a high-end guest experience.
