Riding the celebrated Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rockies is a bucket-list experience, and passengers will soon enjoy upgraded SilverLeaf rail cars that match the journey’s breathtaking scenery.
The train operator has partnered with French rail manufacturer Alstom to strip existing cars down to their frames and rebuild them from the ground up. The comprehensive refurbishment focuses on comfort, reliability and enhanced viewing opportunities.
“We underwent extensive research to understand what our guests require to be completely comfortable and have every amenity available at their seat,” said Gord Miller, vice president of rail operations and asset development at Rocky Mountaineer. “Alstom is a leader in train car builds and often at the helm of new developments in engineering. After much consideration and evaluation of prospective partners, Alstom had the expertise to produce the best possible SilverLeaf cars.”
The modernization includes state-of-the-art mechanical systems to improve performance and dependability, redesigned luxurious seating for greater comfort on long journeys, and oversized windows that maximize views of the mountains, valleys and wildlife. Interior finishes and lighting have also been refined to create a more welcoming atmosphere for guests.
Alstom’s involvement brings extensive rail engineering and refurbishment experience to the project. “Alstom has a strong history providing services to rail customers and we are delighted to be working with Rocky Mountaineer on this project,” said Bernd Burgstahler, managing director, services, North America, Alstom. “Rebuilding Rocky Mountaineer’s cars will allow them to continue to provide the unique and luxurious experience and service their guests have come to expect.”
The upgraded SilverLeaf cars are intended to preserve the signature Rocky Mountaineer experience—scenic daylight travel, attentive onboard service and a comfortable cabin—while incorporating modern technology and materials that extend the life of the fleet. These improvements aim to enhance guest satisfaction and operational efficiency across routes that traverse some of Canada’s most spectacular landscapes.
By focusing on both passenger comfort and technical excellence, the collaboration ensures the refurbished cars meet contemporary expectations for luxury rail travel without compromising the panoramic views and relaxed pace that define Rocky Mountaineer journeys.
