ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: Arriving in Singapore is straightforward. Taxis from Changi Airport typically take about 15 minutes, and traffic is usually light. Pulling into the circular drive of the historic Raffles Hotel, first opened in 1887, you immediately notice the elegant façade and the doormen in traditional Sikh livery who welcome guests and assist with luggage and requests.
Stepping into the newly renovated lobby, you’re greeted by gleaming white marble floors, soaring ceilings and abundant natural light. During check-in I was offered a choice of Champagne or water while staff confirmed my reservations and spa bookings and offered assistance with any additional plans. I was introduced to my assigned butler, who served as my primary contact and organizer throughout the stay. Every guest is paired with a butler, and they often become a trusted part of the experience.
GUEST QUARTERS: The Palm Court Suites occupy the oldest wing of the hotel and open onto a lush courtyard, providing easy access to the main building and restaurants. The suites retain the building’s old-world charm while integrating modern technology and conveniences. Entering the suite you find a spacious parlor with a comfortable seating area, contemporary artwork and lively accents. The lounge includes a wall-mounted television and a breakfast nook that doubles as a functional workspace. A classic leather trunk-style minibar holds bottled waters and curated tea selections.
The bedroom continues the elegant, colonial-inspired aesthetic with high ceilings, whitewashed walls, teak floors and a brass-accented ceiling fan. Furnishings include a chaise longue, two four-poster queen-sized beds and plush rugs. Bedside tables are upgraded to accommodate modern needs, featuring a touch panel for lights and air-conditioning and an integrated radio with ceiling speakers. A large teak armoire houses another television, and separate his-and-hers closets provide ample storage along with comfortable Chinese-style blue-and-white slippers.
The bathroom stands out as a highlight of the suite. Bright lighting and shuttered windows frame a generous heritage-style spa tub set against striking black-and-white Peranakan tile flooring and marble walls. The butler will draw a bath on request. Two teak vanities offer generous counter space and excellent lighting, stocked with Ormonde Jayne amenities featuring an Isfarkand scent. Thick, white towels and heavy cotton spa robes display the Raffles peacock emblem.
SERVICES/AMENITIES: Renovations have elevated the hotel’s dining and beverage offerings. On my first evening I dined at La Dame de Pic, where Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic presents elegant French cuisine with local influences, complemented by thoughtful Champagne and wine pairings. The meal unfolded into an enjoyable, multi-course evening. Mornings were often spent at the Tiffin Room, which offers a generous buffet and an excellent dim sum program; the dim sum quickly became my preferred breakfast choice.

The Writers Bar, honoring the hotel’s literary guests, opens into the lobby and features rich brown leather seating and a refined atmosphere. Signature cocktails such as the Eternal Youth—created with Elizabeth Taylor in mind—offer a playful nod to the hotel’s storied past. The Long Bar remains a lively destination for the classic Singapore Sling and casual fun, though it can attract long lines; the wait tends to be worth it.
The Raffles Spa, located in the Arcade, provides a peaceful retreat. I selected a 90-minute Signature Gemstone massage before a late-night flight home, which left me relaxed and ready for travel.
