Cruises present plenty of chances to overindulge, but many lines are also responding to passengers who want to disembark feeling healthier than when they boarded. That shift goes beyond larger gyms and updated equipment: cruise operators are increasingly offering comprehensive wellness programs that nurture both body and mind.
While some travelers still favor buffet-and-booze escapes with Broadway-style shows and high-tech entertainment, a growing number seek more restorative experiences. The “goop at Sea” voyage illustrates this trend: Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness brand planned a Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona aboard Celebrity Cruises’ new 2,910-passenger ship, Celebrity Apex, with workshops and talks focused on mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Goop’s team was set to design nutritious menus and present sessions with leading wellness practitioners.
Crystal Cruises likewise built a wellness-focused itinerary into its lengthy 71-day voyage on Crystal Symphony from Athens to Auckland, departing Oct. 11, 2021. With a “Mind, Body & Spirit” theme, the cruise scheduled tai chi, yoga and Pilates instructors, spa experiences guided by feng shui principles, and a “Walk-on-Water” activity using weighted vests and walking poles around the ship’s 360-degree Promenade Deck. Silversea Cruises has expanded spa and fitness offerings to include holistic and traditional practices such as acupuncture and fat-burning nutrition. Lindblad Expeditions brought wellness to its National Geographic fleet with a nature-centered approach: Certified Wellness Specialists lead morning stretches, aerobic shore walks and individualized spa and massage treatments, reinforcing the idea that time in nature is restorative.

Oceania Cruises emphasizes wellness both on board and ashore through its Wellness Discovery Tours, which offer roughly 50 shore excursion choices, including mineral baths in Rome, reflexology on a rice barge, meditation with a monk and traditional dance therapy. Passengers can join beach yoga, tai chi sessions or explore Chinese traditional medicine. On board, Oceania features “Vitality Cuisine” in the Grand Dining Room, along with fresh juices and smoothies at Waves Grill. The line has also developed plant-based versions of familiar favorites—burgers, ice cream and crème brûlée—so guests can enjoy indulgent flavors with a healthier twist.
Since 2016, integrative medicine pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil has overseen Seabourn’s wellness and spa programs, shaping offerings that blend physical, social, environmental and spiritual wellbeing. Each Seabourn ship includes a Mindful Living Coach certified in yoga and meditation who leads seminars and classes. New spa treatments, such as Earth Grounding and Restorative Salt Stone massages, reflect this mind-body approach. Seabourn’s annual “Voyages to Wellness,” often led by Dr. Weil, feature daily meditations, yoga, Pilates, and seminars on stress management, chronic pain, heart health, nutrition, sleep, aging and other wellness topics.
Today nearly every major cruise line offers a menu of wellness options: New Age spa treatments, alternative health workshops, mind-body exercise classes, plant-forward dining and special shore excursions designed to promote wellbeing. The newest luxury at sea increasingly emphasizes self-improvement rather than pure indulgence.
TO SLEEP, PERCHANCE TO DREAM
Experts agree that quality sleep is fundamental to health and wellness—especially on a cruise, where unfamiliar surroundings and a new routine can interfere with rest.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises has developed an elaborate approach to help guests sleep deeply. For Regal Suite passengers on Seven Seas Splendor, the “Restorative Sleep Ritual” begins with an Around the World Massage at the Serene Spa & Wellness, combining Swedish techniques with bamboo, heated volcanic stones, coconut poultices, Moroccan argan oil and calming fragrances inspired by India and Egypt.
The ritual features a milk bath described as nourishing and rejuvenating; enriched with vitamins, amino acids and herbs, it aims to soften the skin and create a soothing transition from spa to sleep.
Completing the experience is a handcrafted Vividus bed, valued at $200,000 and made in Sweden by certified bed artisans over nine weeks. The bed’s multiple handstitched layers are designed to deliver a supportive, zero-gravity feel intended to enhance restorative sleep.
With the Restorative Sleep Ritual, Regent Seven Seas aims to provide exceptionally deep, natural sleep at sea—turning overnight rest into a central element of the cruise wellness experience.
