Oregon Weather Compass: New Travel Tool for Trip Planning

The Oregon Tourism Commission, Travel Oregon, has launched the Oregon Weather Compass, a mobile site that helps both residents and visitors find the weather they want and activities that match it. Using real-time weather data provided through a partnership with The Weather Channel, the site directs explorers to locations within Oregon that offer preferred conditions—sun, snow, or rain—and suggests nearby attractions and experiences.

The Weather Compass is designed for users located in or within roughly 300 miles of Oregon’s borders. Research shows that one of the primary uses of smartphones is accessing location-based information, so Travel Oregon built this tool to make finding weather and related activities simple and immediate. The site offers tailored recommendations so locals and visitors can quickly discover plans that suit the day’s conditions.

“Oregon’s varied landscape—from coast to mountains, high desert to fertile valleys—means you can often find a different climate without leaving the state,” said Todd Davidson, chief executive officer of Travel Oregon. “With such diversity, somewhere in Oregon the sun may be shining while snow falls elsewhere. The Weather Compass makes it easy for people to locate the weather they prefer and to find activities that turn that weather into memorable experiences.”

The interface is intuitive: users hold their phones flat like a compass, choose a weather icon—snow, sun, or rain—and the site recommends a reachable destination featuring that weather. Each destination page provides a concise description, an expanded forecast, driving directions, and options for further information. Whether you’re planning a coastal storm-watching excursion, a day of snowboarding, or some sunbathing, the Weather Compass connects you to the right place and the routes to get there.

By combining location-aware design with live weather updates and curated activity suggestions, Travel Oregon’s mobile site aims to simplify trip planning and encourage exploration throughout the state. The tool highlights Oregon’s seasonal variety and helps travelers make the most of whatever weather they seek—turning a quick search into a planned outing with clear directions, practical forecasts, and local recommendations.
