TAP Air Portugal: Flights to and from Porto Made Simple

When American travelers plan a trip to Portugal, Lisbon often tops the list. TAP Air Portugal serves Lisbon from all ten of its North American gateways, but Porto—the country’s vibrant second city—is increasingly popular and also reachable on direct flights from Newark.

Porto is two distinct destinations separated by the Douro River. The city of Porto sits on one bank while Vila Nova de Gaia, home to many port wine lodges and the new World of Wine complex, occupies the opposite side. The two are easily connected on foot via the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge.

Porto is exceptionally photogenic and best explored on foot, especially along the riverfront; trams can help with the city’s steeper hills. The Ribeira riverside promenade showcases historic buildings topped with terracotta roofs overlooking the bustling Douro. Look for the blue azulejo tiles that decorate facades throughout the city—these decorative tiles arrived in Portugal from Seville in the 15th century during the reign of King Manuel I.

Highlights and activities not to miss while visiting Porto include:

Take a leisurely cruise along the Douro River. These scenic boat trips follow the historic route once used by wine merchants transporting port from the Douro Valley to the cellars, and they pass beneath the famous Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Sample as many pastéis de nata as you can. These iconic custard tarts are believed to have originated with resourceful convent nuns who used leftover egg yolks after employing egg whites as starch, creating a beloved Portuguese pastry.

Wander through the Baixa and Bolhão districts. These neighborhoods rank among Porto’s most historic and charming. Meander along cobblestone streets, discover Mercado do Bolhão, stop for coffee at the Majestic Café, stroll Rua Santa Catarina, and visit the elegant Palácio da Bolsa.

Try the francesinha, Porto’s famous sandwich. Hearty and indulgent, a francesinha layers steak, sausage, and ham, covers them with melted cheese, and finishes with a rich tomato-based sauce and a fried egg on top. It’s a substantial meal—either enjoy one if you’re very hungry or split it with a friend.

Visit Livraria Lello, often linked with Harry Potter lore. J.K. Rowling reportedly drew inspiration from Porto while living and teaching in the city. Designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves in a Neo-Gothic style and opened by the Lello brothers in 1906, the bookstore features carved wood paneling, a sweeping central staircase, floor-to-ceiling shelves, and a stained-glass skylight—elements that delight book lovers and fans of the series alike.

Discover the World of Wine and Porto’s port wine traditions. The Douro Valley has been producing port since the 17th century and remains the world’s only official Port wine region. Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, many of the region’s best port lodges are clustered within easy walking distance. Higher up from the riverfront, the World of Wine complex offers a modern cultural and culinary experience with multiple dining venues and a network of historic port caves to explore.
