As Finnair nears its 90th anniversary on November 1, the airline is introducing a series of improvements aimed at enhancing the passenger experience. Key upgrades include a major expansion of in-flight entertainment on long-haul routes, a broader selection of complimentary wines, beers and spirits in the Helsinki Airport lounge, and an ongoing retrofit of business-class seats to provide fully flat recline.
Finnair’s on-demand entertainment now offers a library of 72 movies and over 150 television shows available to passengers in both economy and business classes. In addition, passengers on the airline’s newer sharklet-equipped Airbus A321s, which primarily serve medium-haul and leisure routes, can rent Samsung Tab 3 tablets for €10. These tablets come preloaded with hours of content including videos, music, games and newspapers.
“Tablet computing has the potential to transform inflight entertainment,” says Jouni Oksanen, Finnair’s director of customer entertainment. “Tablet systems are lighter, easier to update operationally and offer a richer, more interactive experience for customers. If the tablet-based service proves successful on these aircraft, we will continue to evaluate expanding it across the fleet.”
The lounge enhancements at Helsinki Airport focus on elevating the complimentary beverage selection for travelers, adding a wider range of wines, beers and spirits to better serve diverse tastes and improve the pre-flight experience.
Finnair’s seat retrofit program targets business-class cabins on long-haul aircraft, replacing older seats with models that recline to a fully flat position for improved comfort on overnight and long-distance flights. This change aligns with the airline’s broader efforts to modernize its fleet and cabin offerings ahead of the anniversary.
With these combined updates—expanded entertainment, improved lounge amenities and upgraded business-class seating—Finnair aims to offer a more comfortable, modern and enjoyable journey for passengers as the carrier celebrates almost nine decades of flying.
