Every year, two Virgin Australia flights bypass Christmas entirely because of an unavoidable time-zone quirk.
While many people sit down to holiday lunches and roast meals with family and friends, passengers aboard flights VA2 and VA8 departing Los Angeles International Airport on Christmas Eve effectively skip December 25 — the calendar jumps past the day during the journey.
Onboard those special holiday departures, travelers enjoyed a festive atmosphere inspired by the season. Cabin crew decorated the cabins with tinsel, small trees and holiday touches to create a warm, celebratory mood for passengers.
The airline served a full Christmas-style meal that included turkey with chestnut stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce, bringing a traditional holiday dinner to the skies for guests who would otherwise miss the day.
As many passengers relaxed and slept, crew members distributed small gifts and treats. Stocking-style surprises were placed at seatbacks and complimentary chocolates and other items were handed out to add a personal touch to the journey.
Velocity frequent flyers on those flights received extra recognition for the season. Members saw a range of account benefits: entry-level members were moved up to the next tier, mid-tier members received higher status upgrades, and top-tier members were awarded a substantial points bonus to acknowledge their loyalty.
These annual flights have become a unique holiday tradition for the airline, combining practical scheduling with festive touches to make the cross-time-zone trip feel like part of the celebration rather than a missed day.
