LAX Plans $2B Rental Car Facility to Improve Passenger Flow

The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Board of Airport Commissioners has approved plans to develop a consolidated rental car facility at Los Angeles International Airport, a project valued at roughly $2 billion and scheduled to open in 2023.

Under the approved plan, LAWA will finance, design, build, operate, and maintain a single consolidated facility that will house more than 20 car rental companies. The project also includes construction of a 2.25-mile automated people mover intended to reduce congestion around the airport and improve passenger flow between terminals and ground transportation.

The agreement now moves to the Los Angeles City Council for final approval before work can proceed.

“This marks more progress toward our vision of the future of LAX,” said Deborah Flint, CEO of LAWA. “We are now in a position to deliver a world-class transportation experience worthy of an international gateway city.”

The Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility will span approximately 5.3 million square feet. The site is planned for the area bounded by Aviation Boulevard on the west, Arbor Vitae Street to the north, La Cienega Boulevard on the east and the new 98th Street extension to the south. Once complete, the facility and people mover are expected to streamline ground transportation, reduce curbside congestion, and provide a more efficient and consolidated rental experience for travelers.

By bringing numerous rental companies into a centralized, modern facility and connecting them directly to terminal areas via the people mover, LAWA aims to improve overall airport accessibility and operational efficiency. The project is part of a wider effort to upgrade LAX’s ground transportation infrastructure and prepare the airport for future growth in passenger demand.
