Israeli carrier EL AL has introduced a new in-flight WiFi service powered by Viasat. The first flight offering the connectivity operated last month on the Tel Aviv (TLV) to Paris (CDG) route.
EL AL reports that 15 aircraft across its Boeing 787 and 737 fleets are already fitted with the Viasat system. The airline plans to expand coverage and connect the majority of its fleet by 2020.
The service is offered in three packages to suit different passenger needs:
Basic – Provides access to instant messaging apps and email. During an initial launch period this package is free on international flights between Europe and North America until the fourth quarter of 2018.
Social – Allows streaming of short videos up to three minutes long. This option is priced at $9.99 per flight, with discounted rates available for Matmid frequent flyers and Flycard holders.
Business – Supports streaming of movies and music and permits VPN access. This premium package is priced at $23 per flight, with reduced fares for Matmid members and Flycard customers.
Nimrod Borovitz, director of strategy and business development at EL AL Israel Airlines, said the decision reflects passenger demand for real-time connectivity while airborne. He explained the airline selected Viasat’s system because it offered the most advanced in-flight WiFi solution available, enabling customers to browse websites, check email, use apps and social networks, listen to music, and stream movies and live sports during flights.
