Watergate Hotel Reopens in Washington, D.C. with Restored Luxury

The Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., a landmark best known for its role in the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and the subsequent resignation of President Richard Nixon, has reopened to guests after being closed since 2007. Last month the property celebrated its return with a black‑tie soirée that unveiled a $125 million restoration and modernization project.

The redesign respects the hotel’s storied past while updating the property for contemporary luxury. Restoration work revived original architectural features such as the grand staircase and the mosaic‑tiled, saltwater indoor pool. Many Mid‑Century Modern details were reintroduced or reinterpreted: custom furniture echoes the building’s exterior curves, and updated finishes create a cohesive, elegant aesthetic throughout public spaces and guest rooms.

The hotel leans into its infamous history with playful touches that reference the Watergate scandal—pens stamped “Stolen from The Watergate Hotel” and key cards that read “no need to break in”—yet the overall atmosphere emphasizes sophistication and comfort. New amenities include a whisky bar in the lobby and a rooftop lounge offering panoramic city views. The rooftop also features an Asian street food vendor that brings bold, casual flavors to the elevated setting.

Dining is led by executive chef Michael Santoro, who presents American cuisine with French influences, balancing seasonal ingredients and classic technique. Guests can expect thoughtfully composed plates that pair well with the hotel’s curated beverage program.

Wellness and leisure are central to the property’s appeal. The mosaic indoor pool remains a focal point, and later this summer the hotel will open Argentta Spa at the poolside area, offering treatments and services designed to complement the guest experience. At reopening, the spa was not yet complete, but its forthcoming debut will expand the hotel’s luxury offerings.

After extensive renovation, the Watergate Hotel now combines historical character with contemporary comforts—carefully restored architectural elements, updated interiors, and new food, drink, and wellness options—positioning the property as both a tribute to its complex past and a refined destination for modern travelers.
