Alaska Airlines customers who are used to the previous carry-on dimensions will need to adjust their packing: the airline is reducing the maximum size allowed for carry-on luggage.
Until now, passengers could bring one carry-on measuring 24 inches by 17 inches by 10 inches. Starting June 4, carry-on bags stored in overhead bins must measure no more than 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches.
Although this change reduces the allowable size, Alaska Airlines notes the new limit remains comparable or even more generous than many other carriers’ limits. The airline says the updated dimensions are intended to reduce problems for travelers with connecting flights on multiple carriers by ensuring a bag that fits on Alaska will also be accepted by other airlines on the same itinerary.
The revised 22 x 14 x 9 measurement aligns Alaska’s allowance with several major U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta and United. Passengers should measure their current bags and consider switching to a smaller carry-on if their luggage exceeds the new limit to avoid gate-checking or repacking at the airport.
To prepare for the change, travelers can:
- Measure their current carry-on (height x width x depth) including wheels and handles to confirm compliance with the 22 x 14 x 9 limit.
- Consider a compact, lightweight suitcase or travel backpack designed to fit the new dimensions.
- Pack efficiently using packing cubes and removing nonessential items to stay within limits without sacrificing necessities.
- Label or tag bags clearly and arrive early to allow time for any adjustments at the gate.
These practical steps will help avoid last-minute hassles and additional fees. While the change may require some passengers to buy new luggage or repack, aligning carry-on rules across multiple carriers should lead to fewer surprises during connections and a more consistent travel experience overall.
