Miami International Airport has opened a newly renovated passport clearance facility in Concourse E featuring facial recognition technology. This facility is the first in the United States dedicated entirely to expedited passport screening using facial matching. Cameras capture a traveler’s image and match it to the passport photo to speed up processing.
Carlos Gimenez, mayor of Miami-Dade County, praised the upgrade: “Miami International Airport, in partnership with CBP, has introduced another cutting-edge enhancement that improves the international arrival experience for visitors to our community. Congratulations to the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and our federal partners for continuing to simplify passport screening at Florida’s busiest international gateway.”
The new system significantly reduces wait times. The facial recognition kiosks can process as many as 10 passengers per minute, helping to ease congestion at one of the nation’s busiest arrival facilities. The Concourse E passport clearance also shortens walking distances for passengers arriving at Concourses E and F, who previously had to use the Concourse D passport hall, improving convenience and flow through the terminal.
Rebeca Sosa, chairperson of the Miami-Dade County Economic Development and Tourism Committee, highlighted the airport’s regional importance: “Aside from welcoming 96 percent of all visitors to Miami, our airport also welcomes 70 percent of international passengers to Florida. With improvements like the new Concourse E passport clearance facility, MIA continues to deliver on its commitment to providing a world-class experience for travelers.”
In addition to the new passport facility, Miami International Airport has updated the MIA Airport Official app to provide seamless access to Mobile Passport Control and CBP forms. This integration allows travelers to complete required steps through the airport’s app, a first-of-its-kind capability with CBP approval. Together, the app enhancements and the Concourse E passport clearance facility aim to streamline arrival procedures and improve the overall passenger experience at MIA.
