New aircraft, numerous awards, and an expanding route network mark a period of rapid growth for Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading carrier. Bringing the new spirit of Africa to destinations across the globe, the airline continues to modernize its fleet and elevate the passenger experience.
Fleet of the Future
In July, Ethiopian Airlines added its fifth Boeing 777-200LR to the fleet. Named The Sahara, the aircraft arrived in Addis Ababa after flying from Seattle via Paris.
Aligned with the carrier’s motto, “The New Spirit of Africa,” The Sahara joins a family of 777-200LRs named after African landmarks, including The Blue Nile, Rift Valley, Victoria Falls and Mount Kilimanjaro.
This delivery represents another milestone in Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term plan to build a world-class African airline. Ethiopian was the first airline in Africa to operate the 777-200LR and the first on the continent to place an order for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner; the carrier expects to take delivery of ten Dreamliners starting in 2012.
On Cloud Nine
Cloud Nine, Ethiopian Airlines’ premier business-class offering, provides an upgraded onboard experience. The cabin is equipped with advanced sleeper seats and personal video screens that give passengers access to more than 80 entertainment options.
The business-class dining experience features gourmet selections, beginning with a taste of Ethiopia: injera, the unique, pancake-like flatbread. Meals are complemented by a selection of fine wines and spirits.
Economy-class seating on the new aircraft has also been improved, with increased seat recline, more legroom and a more spacious cabin layout to enhance overall passenger comfort.
Looking Ahead
Recently recognized as The African Cargo Airline of the Year and Africa’s Most Profitable Airline, Ethiopian Airlines has accumulated numerous awards during its nearly 70 years of operation. Additional honors include the Airline Reliability Performance Award, the Silver Boeing Performance Excellence Award and recognition from the African Airlines Association as Airline of the Year.
The carrier expanded its international network in 2011 with service to Milan, its 63rd international destination, and has continued to grow with plans for flights to Toronto and destinations in Brazil scheduled to begin in 2012.
