Doha: Blending Qatari Tradition with Modern Business Events

Doha has established itself as a leading meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination by combining Qatari culture and hospitality with modern facilities and bespoke service. This blend of tradition and innovation creates memorable experiences for delegates and organizers alike.

Architecturally significant venues and cutting-edge amenities provide inspiring settings for events, while Doha’s global connectivity and tourism infrastructure make it convenient for international attendees. Hamad International Airport, recognized as Skytrax’s World’s Best Airport for 2024, sits strategically between Europe and Asia, making Doha highly accessible for business, leisure and bleisure travel.

Qatar Tourism plays a central role in promoting and supporting MICE activity with an incentive program designed to simplify event planning and delivery. A straightforward online application connects organizers with a dedicated team that assists in sourcing venues, coordinating with public and private stakeholders, arranging cultural programs and site inspections, and facilitating visa processes.

Qatar Tourism also collaborates with Qatar Airways to enhance attendee access and convenience. The airline, honored as World’s Best MICE Airline 2023 and Middle East Best MICE Airline 2023, serves more than 170 destinations and partners with numerous carriers to simplify international travel to Qatar.

Qatar Airways’ QMICE program provides incentives for event organizers and participants, including discounted fares, flexible booking and travel dates, and Avios rewards for Beyond Business members. The program also offers a voluntary carbon offset option for attendees seeking more sustainable travel choices.

Doha is home to several large-scale venues with award-winning facilities. The Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) spans roughly 970,000 square feet and can host up to 34,000 attendees. Located in the West Bay business district, DECC features a principal event hall that can be subdivided into smaller spaces, and it benefits from close proximity to more than 20 hotels within walking distance, offering over 6,000 rooms across various price levels. For guests farther afield, the venue partners with local transport providers and offers on-site valet services to streamline arrivals and departures.

The Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) provides an even broader range of event options, including auditoriums, meeting rooms, exhibition halls, media and VIP lounges, and a business center. Occupying nearly 2 million square feet, QNCC remains a flagship venue within Doha despite being constructed nearly 15 years ago. Designed by architect Arata Isozaki, the building features a prominent sculptural element at the entrance inspired by the sidra tree, a cultural symbol in Qatar.

The sidra tree motif reflects a long-standing regional tradition: sidra trees were historically valued for their health benefits and served as gathering places for scholars and community discussion. This symbolism makes QNCC a fitting location for conferences and meetings that seek to connect ideas, culture and business. Both DECC and QNCC accommodate events ranging from intimate meetings to large-scale galas, and with the support of Qatar Tourism and partner organizations, event planning in Doha can be efficient, culturally rich and logistically smooth.

UNIQUE VENUES
Doha’s distinctive venues offer cultural depth as well as functionality. Al Shaqab Equestrian Center celebrates Qatar’s heritage of Arabian horse breeding and racing. The world-class facility provides tours and close encounters with its horses and can host events from small private gatherings to upscale functions for more than 1,000 guests. The expansive 242-acre estate also holds historical significance: it stands on land linked to events that contributed to Qatar’s path to independence.

The National Museum of Qatar presents another striking option for MICE events with architecture inspired by the desert rose—natural gypsum formations shaped by the wind into rose-like clusters. Designed by Jean Nouvel, the 430,000-square-foot museum accommodates up to 1,500 guests and pairs evocative design with an array of national artifacts. Its location is convenient for visitors, within walking distance of the Corniche waterfront promenade and the traditional Souq Waqif, offering cultural and leisure opportunities for attendees.
