How Robots Can Help Travelers Stay Well on the Road

Travelers concerned about picking up illnesses from airplanes, hotel rooms, or other shared spaces may be interested in a compact new device launching on Kickstarter. CleanseBot is a handheld, packable robot designed to eliminate bacteria and other microbes from bedding and surfaces.

According to founder Tom Yang, the device employs C-spectrum ultraviolet light to neutralize bacteria, germs and even dust mites. Its small size lets users slide it under blankets and sheets to sanitize sleeping areas, then lift it to treat other surfaces and personal items.

“It can go remotely under the blankets and sanitize sheets, but then you can pick it up … and hold it over literally any surface, toy, item, anything you want to disinfect,” Yang said in a media interview.

Yang conceived the idea after he and his wife encountered a hotel room that had not been cleaned thoroughly while on vacation. That experience motivated them to design a personal, portable solution that gives travelers more control over their own hygiene when staying away from home.

The unit weighs under a pound and includes a portable charger. On a full charge it can operate for up to three hours, and built-in sensors prevent it from tumbling off elevated surfaces like beds. While the product is still in development, the company has indicated a planned release in April.

CleanseBot aims to appeal to frequent travelers, parents and anyone who wants a lightweight, travel-ready sanitation option. Its portability and multi-surface design make it a convenient tool for addressing concerns about cleanliness in hotel rooms, rental properties and other shared accommodations. As with any UV-based device, proper use according to the manufacturer’s instructions is important to ensure effective disinfection while avoiding exposure to direct UV light.

Backers on Kickstarter often support early-stage products to help bring them to market and to receive the first units produced. Consumers considering pre-orders should review campaign details, timelines and safety information to make an informed decision before pledging.
