Following Lonely Planet’s selection of Canada as the 2017 travel destination of the year, the Canadian government is pursuing measures to make domestic and cross-border air travel more affordable for residents and visitors.
At present, flying between Canadian cities can be expensive, reflecting the country’s vast size and relatively limited competition on many routes. To lower fares, Ottawa is seeking to attract more international carriers and encourage partnerships that could support the growth of low-cost airlines serving domestic routes. The tourism ministry also intends to streamline the travel experience by speeding up security procedures without compromising safety and by providing clearer, more accessible information about passengers’ rights.
In addition to reducing airfare, Canada is exploring alternatives for frequent travelers, including proposals for high-speed rail connecting major centers such as Montreal and Toronto and serving key intermediate communities. Such investments aim to expand affordable, efficient transportation options across the country while supporting tourism and regional connectivity.
