Uber Black, Uber’s premium ride service, has introduced a new Quiet Mode option across the United States for riders who prefer a silent trip.
When booking an Uber Black or Uber Black SUV, passengers can now choose Quiet Mode to indicate they do not want conversation during the ride. The app also offers “happy to chat” and “no preference” choices for riders who are open to conversation or indifferent.
Drivers have responded positively to the change.
“The reaction of Uber Black drivers was overwhelmingly positive because they want to deliver a great experience to their rider … but they don’t necessarily know what the rider wants,” said Aydin Ghajar, product manager at Uber. “These drivers take a lot of pride in what they do as customer service agents.”
The update is part of a broader set of refinements to the app. The latest version lets riders indicate whether they are carrying luggage and offers the ability to set air-conditioning preferences. Together, these options help personalize the ride and reduce the need for conversation if a passenger prefers to ride in silence.
By giving riders clear signals about their preferences, Uber Black aims to improve the in-car experience for both passengers and drivers. Quiet Mode provides a simple, respectful way for riders to request privacy without awkwardness, while the luggage and climate settings help drivers prepare the vehicle to meet passenger needs more efficiently.
These enhancements reflect a focus on tailored, convenient service for premium customers, letting users control small but meaningful aspects of their journey. Riders who value a calm, private ride can now select Quiet Mode when they book, ensuring their preferences are communicated up front and honored throughout the trip.
