In recent decades, mall-style shopping centers, fine-dining restaurants and concierge services have replaced the spartan airport facilities that were common through much of the late 20th century. Today, some airports are advancing the idea of airports as destinations by creating interior spaces that are both comfortable and visually engaging.
Earlier this year, the South Florida chapter of the International Interior Design Association honored Miami International Airport’s North Terminal Marketplace with its top retail design award, citing the project’s challenging site and its seamless integration with the existing architectural language while producing a bright, attractive retail environment.
Designed by Heery International and situated between Gates D26 and D29, the Marketplace highlights Miami’s cultural diversity with offerings that include Caribbean foods and Cuban-style cigars, reflecting local flavors and traditions.

Also this year, the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality recognized the renovated lobby at the airport’s MIA Hotel, and Floor Focus magazine awarded the hotel’s white, blue and green terrazzo lobby floor its Vision Design Award.
Located landside on the second floor of the airport’s central Terminal E, the 252-room MIA Hotel provides guests with direct access to airline ticket counters, departure concourses, airport concession shops, restaurants, public transportation and the rental car center, making connections and amenities easy and convenient.
Beyond award-winning design, Miami International Airport is introducing new passenger services, including a virtual assistant. “Leticia,” a life-sized interactive hologram that speaks both English and Spanish, is being tested at two entrances to the airport’s South Terminal. Available 24/7 during the trial, the virtual assistant helps travelers with information about the airport’s shops, restaurants and services.
