Alaska Airlines Launches New Direct Flights to Hawaii

Alaska Airlines has launched a new nonstop service between San Francisco (SFO) and Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA), marking another expansion in the carrier’s growing West Coast network. Introduced earlier this month, the route is part of Alaska’s extensive expansion from California — its largest network growth in the airline’s 85-year history — and represents the 31st new route the airline has started from the state this year.

Flights on the San Francisco–Kona route are operated with Airbus A320 aircraft formerly part of the Virgin America fleet. These aircraft provide a three-class cabin configuration, offering a choice of seating classes to suit different traveler preferences. Passengers will find power outlets available throughout each cabin, enabling device charging for work or entertainment during the flight. In keeping with the airline’s approach to service, in-flight dining on this route features locally inspired meal options to reflect Hawaiian flavors and regional tastes.

“Bay Area guests now have the option to fly from any of the region’s major airports to the Island of Hawai’i,” said Annabel Chang, vice president, Bay Area, Alaska Airlines. The statement highlights Alaska’s focus on improving connectivity between Northern California and the Hawaiian Islands, making travel more convenient for both leisure visitors and those visiting family or conducting business in Hawai‘i.

Local tourism leaders also welcomed the new connection. “We are honored and thankful to be a part of Virgin America’s expanded service to the Hawai’ian Islands,” said Ross Birch, executive director of the Island of Hawai’i Visitors Bureau. He noted that the Kona route adds another convenient option for travelers from the Bay Area and helps introduce more visitors to the island’s distinct attractions. The Island of Hawai‘i is celebrated for its diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and outdoor recreation opportunities — from hiking and snorkeling to exploring Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park — and improved air service supports visitor access to those experiences.

The new daily schedule provides a convenient daytime departure from San Francisco, leaving SFO at 11:30 a.m. and arriving in Kona at 3:15 p.m. Pacific Time. The return service departs Kona at 4:15 p.m. and arrives back in San Francisco at 11:17 p.m., offering travelers a straightforward connection that allows for a full day on either end. This timing supports both weekend getaways and longer vacations, while giving passengers flexible options for planning arrival and departure times.

By integrating former Virgin America aircraft and service elements into its broader network, Alaska Airlines continues to extend its reach across the Pacific while maintaining amenities that appeal to West Coast travelers. The Kona launch complements other Hawaii routes and reflects the airline’s strategic emphasis on increasing frequency and destinations from California airports. For travelers seeking direct access to the Island of Hawai‘i from the Bay Area, the new nonstop service adds convenience and choice.

Passengers interested in booking should check Alaska Airlines’ official site for the latest schedule, fares, and travel details. As with any new route, travelers are encouraged to review baggage policies, seat selection options, and any travel advisories prior to departure to ensure a smooth trip. The addition of the San Francisco–Kona nonstop is another step in expanding connections between the Bay Area and the islands, supporting tourism and offering more convenient access to Hawai‘i’s natural and cultural attractions.
