New Brunswick’s historic Algonquin Resort reopens this spring after an extensive $35 million restoration. Perched above Passamaquoddy Bay in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, the Tudor-style hotel has welcomed guests since 1889, originally attracting summer visitors from Boston, Montreal and New York.
The renovation was carried out with careful attention to the hotel’s historic character. Key architectural elements were preserved, including the half-timbered and stucco façade, 96 Juliet balconies and 16 second-floor patios. All 200 of the building’s 11-foot windows received new glass, outdoor event spaces were expanded to accommodate larger gatherings, and several double-sided wood-burning fireplaces were converted to gas for convenience and efficiency.
As the first Canadian property to join Marriott’s Autograph Collection, The Algonquin Resort blends its storied past with modern amenities. The property sits alongside an 18-hole championship golf course, redesigned in 2000 by Thomas McBroom, and now offers a newly added 1,400-square-foot spa for guests seeking relaxation and wellness treatments.
The restoration balances historic preservation with contemporary comforts, ensuring the resort remains a landmark destination while meeting current expectations for comfort and service. Guests can expect character-defining details restored to their original charm alongside updated facilities that enhance the visitor experience.
With its scenic bay views, classic architecture and upgraded amenities, The Algonquin Resort returns as a refined seaside retreat. Whether visiting for golf, spa services, special events or simply to enjoy the coastal setting, the hotel’s reopening marks a renewed chapter in its long history as a premier destination in New Brunswick.
