Inside Singapore Airlines’ Spacious First-Class Suites: What to Expect

In 2007 Singapore Airlines introduced a groundbreaking first-class suite that featured the first double bed ever offered on a commercial flight. A decade later the airline introduced an updated suite designed to meet rising expectations in luxury air travel and to compete with innovations by other carriers.

According to airline executives, the new suites are approximately 60 percent larger than the previous generation. Each suite includes a leather recliner and a single bed, and selected suites can be paired with an adjacent unit to create a double bed. The design adds practical storage compartments for handbags and carry-ons, enhanced privacy through sliding doors and adjustable blinds, and a 32-inch monitor for in-flight entertainment.

The first aircraft equipped with the new suites began service on Dec. 18 on the Singapore (SIN)–Sydney (SYD) route. Singapore Airlines planned to roll out the suite across its entire Airbus A380 fleet by 2020.

Despite this upgrade, Singapore Airlines continues to face strong competition from carriers such as Etihad Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways, which have introduced their own high-end features like onboard showers and bars.

The A380 refresh also included improvements to business and economy classes. Business-class seats now fully recline into beds without requiring a manual flip mechanism, adding convenience and comfort for passengers. Economy class was reconfigured to add ten more seats while maintaining an emphasis on comfort with increased legroom, improved back support and a six-way adjustable headrest.

These updates reflect a broader trend in long-haul travel: airlines are investing in cabin design and amenities to deliver greater privacy, more comfortable sleeping options and enhanced entertainment, while still balancing capacity and overall passenger comfort across all travel classes.
