St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, known for its long-standing sabrage tradition, has introduced private Champagne sabrage master classes at The St. Regis San Francisco. Available now, these private sessions are led by an expertly trained St. Regis Butler and are open to both hotel guests and local residents.
Sabrage has a history stretching more than 200 years, and at St. Regis the ritual goes back to 1904 when founder John Jacob Astor IV had a bottle sabered nightly to mark the transition from day to night. That iconic practice continues at several St. Regis properties worldwide and is central to the brand’s heritage.

“For many guests, our signature Art of Sabrage service presented each evening in The St. Regis San Francisco Bar is a highlight of the stay,” said Roger Huldi, general manager of The St. Regis San Francisco. “We are pleased to share this ritual, which is central to our identity, with the local community. With our new private Champagne sabrage masterclasses, we aim to bring the glamour, style and excitement of sabering to anyone curious about this cherished St. Regis tradition.”
Each master class is tailored to the group’s size and guides participants through the history, safety, and technique of sabrage before they attempt the ritual themselves. The introductory offering is a 30-minute session for up to four guests, starting at $500. This package includes one bottle of Moët & Chandon Champagne and a selection of canapés. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
