Exploring Cannabis Culture and Events in British Columbia

British Columbia may be far from the Swiss Alps, but these regions share a meaningful connection. The inaugural Mountain Festival in Golden, B.C., titled “Celebrating Swiss Guides in Golden,” honors the Swiss guides and mountaineering pioneers whose skill and courage helped shape this area of the Canadian Rockies.

The festival runs the weekend of May 17–18 and features multiple screenings of the documentary film Swiss Guides in Western Canada — Beyond Adventure at the Golden Cinema. The film explores the lives, ascents, and legacy of the Swiss guides who came to Western Canada, providing both historical context and personal stories that connect the Alps to the Rockies.

Alongside the film series, the program includes guided visits to the Walter Feuz house at Edelweiss Village, offering a close look at the home and history of one of the region’s notable Swiss guides. The Art Gallery of Golden will present an exhibition of photographs from the private collection of Syd Feuz, while the Purcell Heli-skiing Lodge will display images by Bruno Engler. Spirit Square will host Swiss-themed entertainment and food, and Swiss artisan products will be available at the Golden Farmers’ Market.

On Sunday, May 18, the Swiss Consulate will host an invitation-only reception featuring guest speaker Susan Engler, author of Bruno Engler Photography: Sixty Years of Mountain Photography in the Canadian Rockies (2001). The weekend also offers Swiss-inspired specials at many local restaurants, giving visitors the chance to sample traditional flavors alongside cultural and photographic exhibits.

The Mountain Festival aims to celebrate the enduring ties between Swiss mountaineering traditions and the people and landscapes of Golden, B.C., highlighting how the expertise and spirit of immigrant guides contributed to the region’s outdoor heritage and tourism. Attendees can expect a mix of historical insight, visual storytelling, guided heritage tours, culinary experiences, and community events that pay tribute to the Swiss influence in the Canadian Rockies.
