Avianca and Air Canada Codeshare: Routes, Benefits & Booking Guide

Just in time for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, Air Canada and Avianca Airlines have joined forces to simplify travel between Canada and Brazil. The two Star Alliance carriers have implemented a codeshare agreement that expands direct connections from Canada to nine Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília. Under this arrangement, travelers can fly nonstop from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Brazilian destinations without changing planes, rechecking baggage or contending with long, indirect layovers.

This codeshare not only benefits leisure travelers attending major events like the Olympics, but also supports growing commercial ties: more than 500 Canadian companies maintain regular business activity in Brazil, and more frequent, reliable flights make trade and corporate travel smoother. In addition to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília, the agreement covers flights to Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador, increasing options for passengers across Canada and Brazil.

Passengers will enjoy coordinated schedules and streamlined connections, since the carriers align flight times and baggage procedures to reduce transfer stress. The codeshare also aims to offer more flexible itineraries and greater seat availability on popular routes, making it easier to plan trips around events, business meetings or leisure travel.

Improved air links can contribute to tourism growth by shortening travel times and enabling more competitive fares through better network integration. For business travelers, the expanded service means faster access to regional markets throughout Brazil and more efficient same-day or overnight travel possibilities between major commercial centers.

By cooperating on these routes, Air Canada and Avianca strengthen their respective networks in the Americas while offering customers a more convenient travel experience. The increased frequency and direct services between Toronto and multiple Brazilian cities reflect a shared commitment to enhancing connectivity and supporting both tourism and commerce between Canada and Brazil.
