When the Lights Go Out: What to Do During a Power Outage

Joining Earth Hour observances worldwide, Langham Place, Fifth Avenue will switch off its lights from 8:30–9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. To mark this global initiative that raises awareness for protecting the planet, the hotel’s dining lounge, Measure, has prepared a special menu inspired by the five classical elements — earth, water, wood, fire and metal — paired with environmentally inspired organic cocktails.

  • Earth: Crudité salad of assorted baby root vegetables with creamy blue cheese dressing
  • Water: Chicken tea with ginseng and goji berries
  • Wood: Smoked duck breast with cold-braised lentils, frisée, orange and walnut dressing
  • Fire: Pizza Arrabbiata topped with pepperoni, jalapeños and arugula
  • Metal: Seared sirloin steak served with wilted spinach and purple potato

During Earth Hour, Measure’s nightly jazz performances will continue by candlelight as the hotel replaces electric lighting with soy candles. To further embrace the spirit of the event, the hotel’s house car service will be substituted for the day by a custom pedicab from Revolution Rickshaws.

This year’s Earth Hour sees participation from a record 158 countries and territories across more than 7,000 cities and towns. Now in its eighth year, Earth Hour has grown from a grassroots movement into a global event that connects hundreds of millions of people across all seven continents.
