Our nation’s capital is known for reinventing itself every few years, which can surprise some visitors but excites MICE planners who welcome the steady influx of new restaurants, hotels, off-site meeting spaces and evolving social and political energy that define Washington, D.C. This dynamic city continues to expand its hospitality and cultural options, making it a top choice for meetings and events.
Destination DC, the city’s official destination marketing organization, reported that Washington hosted more than 22.8 million domestic and international leisure and business visitors in 2017, marking the eighth consecutive year of record attendance. New venue openings and renovations continue to reshape the city’s offerings. Estimates for 2019 projected at least 21 citywide conventions and special events, generating roughly 359,557 room nights and an economic impact near $341 million. According to STR’s 2017 DestinationMAP, D.C. ranks among the top three meeting destinations in North America.
The Walter E. Washington Convention Center remains the city’s primary MICE facility for large conventions and exhibitions. The center offers 2.3 million square feet of space and can host events ranging from 500 to 42,000 attendees. Noted for its energy efficiency, the convention center includes 77 breakout rooms and the region’s largest ballroom. Connected to the center via an underground concourse, the 1,175-room Marriott Marquis Washington, DC adds about 105,000 square feet of additional event space, offering convenience for planners and attendees.
CityCenterDC is a 10-acre mixed-use luxury development that, when complete, will add an upscale retail and dining destination in downtown D.C. About 30 high-end shops and restaurants are already operating. Nearby, a $250 million, 360-room Conrad Washington, DC—designed by Herzog & de Meuron—offers luxury accommodations just a short walk from the Convention Center.
In Mount Vernon Square, a $122.5 million mixed-use complex opposite the Convention Center is incorporating 15 historic structures and is scheduled to open soon. Another project, Columbia Place, includes 480,000 square feet of development featuring a dual-brand hotel (Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn) and a 203-unit apartment complex, adding both meeting capacity and housing options near the convention hub.

The Wharf district, transformed in recent years, has become a vibrant waterfront destination with four public piers and a new performance venue, The Anthem, which accommodates between 2,000 and 6,000 guests. The Wharf’s hotel offerings include the InterContinental Washington D.C. – The Wharf with 278 rooms and 17,000 square feet of meeting space, the Canopy by Hilton with a rooftop lounge and large outdoor terrace, and the 237-room Hyatt House, which provides flexible indoor/outdoor meeting areas. Restaurants and nightlife along the waterfront further enhance event experiences.
The historic W Washington D.C., a 317-room property in a 1917 Beaux Arts building across from the White House, completed a major renovation to guestrooms, its rooftop bar and lobby areas, blending modern amenities with classic architectural details. Renovations like these continue to refresh the city’s hospitality inventory and create appealing event backdrops.
Washington’s culinary scene is a major draw for planners and attendees. The Inn at Little Washington earned three Michelin stars, becoming the first restaurant in the D.C. area to receive that distinction. Located in Washington, Virginia, the property offers private dining, receptions and meeting options for groups of 30–90, providing an upscale off-site option for planners willing to travel outside the city.
Within the metropolitan area, several other acclaimed restaurants offer tasting menus and private dining suitable for events. Notable examples include Pineapple and Pearls and Minibar with multiple Michelin stars, and one-starred establishments such as Bresca, Masseria, Métier and Komi. Local favorites like Capitol Hill’s Joselito Casa de Comidas and Wharf newcomer Kaliwa add variety for groups seeking Spanish tapas or Southeast Asian cuisine.
New hotel brands are also entering the market: the SLS Hotel Washington, a 175-room property in Mount Vernon Triangle, is planned with about 10,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space. The first Virgin Hotels in D.C. is set to open in the Union Market district with 178 rooms, a rooftop lounge with an infinity pool and multiple event spaces, reflecting continued investment in unique hotel experiences.
