Transcontinental Upgrade: Modernizing Long-Haul Connectivity

Beginning July 1, Delta Air Lines will introduce three updated Boeing 757 aircraft equipped with full flat-bed seats on the transcontinental route between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). These aircraft mark the first 757s to receive Delta’s recently announced BusinessElite interior upgrades for transcontinental service.

The enhanced BusinessElite cabins provide full flat-bed seats on flights between New York-JFK and key West Coast destinations including Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and Seattle (SEA). Delta plans to offer full flat-bed seating across all transcontinental flights on these routes by summer 2015, improving comfort and privacy for business and premium leisure travelers.

The rollout is part of Delta’s broader effort to modernize its fleet and elevate the onboard experience for transcontinental passengers, with a focus on extended comfort for longer daytime and overnight crossings. Full flat-bed seats allow travelers to rest more comfortably on flights that often exceed five hours, and they typically come with additional amenities such as enhanced privacy, improved storage and upgraded in-flight service.

These changes reflect ongoing competition among carriers to provide premium products on high-demand business routes. By equipping 757s with full flat-bed seats, Delta aims to match or exceed the offerings of its competitors on the lucrative New York–West Coast market.

Customers flying these routes can expect a more consistent premium experience as the fleet conversion continues. As more aircraft are updated, Delta will expand availability of the upgraded cabins, giving frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike greater access to lie-flat seating on coast-to-coast flights.
