Dukes and Dragon Slayers: Inside Noble Legends and Battles

Craving a taste of the Middle Ages? Travel to France, where a rich calendar of medieval-themed exhibitions and festivals brings history vividly to life. Dijon’s Fine Arts Museum, housed in the former palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, has recently restored its Medieval and Renaissance rooms. From May 17 to Oct. 13, the museum presents a multimedia installation that features a large screen offering virtual tours and digital reconstructions of the Sainte-Chapelle’s chancel, nave and transept, enhancing visitors’ understanding of medieval architecture and religious art.

Throughout Burgundy, towns and castles stage lively events that celebrate medieval culture. In Semur-en-Auxois, the town hosts the Fête Médiévale (May 24–25) and the Fête de la Bague (May 31). These family-friendly gatherings present puppet shows, theatrical performances and street entertainment that recreate the atmosphere of a medieval market town.

Château de Couches presents Les Médiévales (July 12–14), a festival focused on traditional medieval crafts and activities. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations of bookbinding, see falconry displays, and attend children’s shows designed to introduce younger audiences to historical crafts and pastimes.

At Château de Thil, the Médiévale des Seigneurs de Thil (Aug. 12–14) recreates a medieval encampment complete with period taverns, feasts, magic shows, games and a bustling marketplace. The festival invites participants to experience the daily life of lords and commoners through reenactments and hands-on activities.

Tonnerre stages the Médiévales de Tonnerre (Sept. 12–14), an event that coincides with the city’s 851st anniversary. The celebration spreads across the streets, where dancers, musicians and artisans perform and sell their wares, transforming the town into a living tribute to its long history.

These events across Burgundy offer a range of immersive experiences—from educational museum exhibits and digital reconstructions to lively outdoor festivals and craft demonstrations—making the region an ideal destination for anyone interested in medieval history, culture and entertainment.
