Amtrak has introduced new hot meal options for sleeping-car passengers aboard two overnight services between Chicago and the East Coast.
Earlier changes replaced the traditional dining car experience on the Lake Shore Limited and Capitol Limited with cold, pre-loaded meals for passengers in sleeper accommodations. Those sleeper amenities also included unlimited soft drinks, an airline-style amenity kit, and a complimentary beer, wine or spirit. Amtrak said it would continue gathering passenger feedback to guide future adjustments.
Responding to that feedback, Amtrak has expanded meal choices to include hot entrees served in bento-style balsa wood boxes for sleeping-car customers. The updated menus now offer hot selections such as braised beef short rib in a red wine and beer sauce, alongside the existing cold options like a vegan wrap, chicken Caesar salad, and an antipasto plate. A new kids’ meal has been added, and kosher meals are available if reserved at least 24 hours in advance.
Sleeping-car guests can choose where to enjoy their meals: in the privacy of their bedroom or roomette, at a table in the Lounge Car, or in the dining car when space and service arrangements allow. These options aim to balance convenience, comfort and food quality for overnight travelers.
Amtrak’s adjustments reflect a broader effort to refine onboard services while operating within the constraints of long-distance rail scheduling and staffing. By offering both cold and hot prepared meals, plus flexible dining locations, the railroad seeks to accommodate diverse passenger preferences and dietary needs without returning immediately to full traditional dining service on those routes.
Passengers are encouraged to indicate dietary restrictions or special requests when booking or at least 24 hours before departure for items such as kosher meals. The carrier will continue to evaluate passenger feedback and operational results to determine whether further updates to dining options or service formats are warranted.
These changes affect sleeper-car passengers on the Lake Shore Limited and Capitol Limited, and represent part of Amtrak’s ongoing adjustments to long-distance service amenities. Travelers who value a hot meal on overnight trips now have additional choices, while those who prefer the earlier cold selections can still opt for them.
Amtrak’s introduction of hot bento-style entrees alongside cold meals is designed to provide a more satisfying onboard dining experience for passengers who book sleeper accommodations on these overnight routes. The combination of varied menu items, flexible dining locations and continued monitoring of passenger feedback aims to improve comfort and satisfaction for long-distance travelers.
