Holland America Line Cruise Update: What Travelers Need to Know

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE is a well-established cruise operator with a fleet of 14 ships visiting more than 400 ports across all seven continents. Rather than building mega-ships, the line focuses on medium-sized vessels that recall the elegance of classic ocean liners with their sleek navy-blue hulls. Holland America has deliberately avoided onboard amusement-park features like climbing walls and water slides, instead emphasizing refined services such as traditional afternoon tea and, in colder regions, steaming mugs of pea soup served on deck.

That pea soup nods to the company’s Dutch heritage, which dates back to its founding in 1873. While Holland America Line is now part of the Carnival group and headquartered in Seattle, its maritime roots remain visible: many crew members trained at the line’s own school in Indonesia, formerly the Dutch East Indies.

Although grounded in tradition, Holland America adapts modern amenities and contemporary programming. America’s Test Kitchen programming now runs fleet-wide, featuring live cooking demonstrations and hands-on workshops led by familiar television personalities. Guests can get expert advice about shore excursions at Explorations Central (EXC), the top-deck coffeehouse and internet café. Evenings come alive on Music Walk, where performances range from chamber music on the Lincoln Center Stage to current hits at Billboard Onboard and blues at B.B. King’s Blues Club.

The line’s newest and largest ship, the 2,650-passenger ms Koningsdam, pushes the brand forward with facilities that appeal to younger travelers and families. The ship’s main theater features a 270-degree LED screen, the Lido Pool includes an outdoor movie screen, and a variety of innovative dining venues spotlight contemporary cuisine. The Culinary Arts Center emphasizes farm-to-table demonstrations and hands-on culinary classes. Accommodations on the ms Koningsdam expand Holland America’s stateroom options to include spa cabins, single-occupancy cabins, and family staterooms that sleep up to five and offer extra closet space plus two separate bathrooms.

By blending classic maritime atmosphere with current cruising trends, Holland America delivers a premium cruise experience that balances elegance and modern comforts. That balance is particularly visible in Alaska, where the line is a long-standing leader: roughly half the fleet sails more than 130 Alaska voyages each summer. As owner of the Westmark Hotels in Alaska, Holland America also facilitates smooth combined land-and-sea itineraries for travelers eager to explore America’s last frontier.
