Fans of the classic film The Sound of Music and the true story of the von Trapp family are planning trips to Salzburg this year to mark the movie’s 60th anniversary. Salzburg, already celebrated year-round for its cuisine, culture and scenic beauty, has long drawn film enthusiasts who take themed tours and visit the movie’s locations. Next year those offerings will expand further with the opening of The Sound of Music museum.
Plan accommodations early. Michael Gigl, director of Austria Tourism New York, says Salzburg attracts roughly 300,000 visitors annually who come specifically to see film-related sites. For the anniversary, special events include guided tours led by Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of Maria and Georg von Trapp, making this a particularly memorable year for travelers.

“[This] has a huge economic impact on the city of Salzburg and Austria in general,” Gigl said. “In a broader sense, The Sound of Music has shaped the image of Austria in the USA, Australia, and many Asian countries significantly. The connection between the ‘real’ von Trapp family, some of whom live in Vermont, remains ongoing and is actively cultivated.”
At Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, a new My Favorite Things getaway celebrates the film with an immersive experience inspired by one of its best-loved tunes. Guests can enjoy an exclusive live performance by Elisabeth von Trapp, a three-course dinner at Schloss Restaurant based on traditional Austrian recipes linked to the movie, and a private tour of Salzburg’s Old Town. That tour covers filming locations, includes a horse-drawn carriage ride, and offers a pause to savor apple strudel.

“The Sound of Music is more than a film — it has become a cultural bridge between Salzburg and the world,” said Beate Kassner, CEO of the Salzburg City Tourist Board. “For 60 years, this story of music, courage, and belonging has drawn countless visitors to our city, particularly from the United States, which remains our most important overseas market and the third-most significant overall. The 60th anniversary is a unique opportunity to celebrate a film that continues to shape Salzburg’s international image. Throughout 2025, a program of exhibitions and events will highlight the movie’s legacy and invite fans to experience the magic of its original locations.”
Whether you’re a longtime admirer or a first-time visitor, Salzburg’s combination of historic sites, curated events and authentic local experiences makes it an appealing destination for lovers of the film and travelers seeking cultural enrichment. Book early to secure special anniversary events and accommodations, and plan to explore both the well-known film locations and the city’s broader culinary and cultural offerings.
