Year-Round Outdoor Adventures in Crans-Montana, Swiss Alps

Perched high in the Valais Alps, the neighboring towns of Crans-Montana are famous as a top ski and snow destination, but the region offers much more year-round. Many visitors prefer to arrive on the Glacier Express, a scenic train route that reveals dramatic alpine landscapes along the way. Once in Crans-Montana, walk the bisses du Tsitorret, a network of historic irrigation channels that meander along terraced hillsides, and stop at L’instant Chocolat to sample creations by Swiss chocolate master David Pasquiet. His handcrafted confections — such as a dark chocolate infused with star anise — are a fitting reward after a hike.

High-altitude hikes continue to impress around the Plaine Morte glacier, and boat trips on the Grottensee, an underground lake between Sion and Sierre, offer a unique perspective on the region. In addition to the Grottensee, five other lakes glitter beneath the mountain sun, providing opportunities for sailing, paddling and lakeside swimming.

Cyclists will find a variety of trails to suit different skill levels, including the adrenaline-focused Kona Bikepark and some 73 miles of marked routes, with two dedicated downhill tracks for thrill-seekers. Golfers can enjoy courses framed by sweeping alpine views at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, which offers four layouts. Highlights include the 18-hole Severiano Ballesteros course and a 9-hole Jack Nicklaus course, both set against a backdrop that on clear days includes the Matterhorn on the horizon.
