Last month the Ace Hotel Chicago opened its rooftop bar, completing the final phase of the hotel’s rollout since it began welcoming guests in mid-July.
The rooftop lounge is called Waydown, a name inspired by a song by Illinois native John Prine. The interior pairs an urban, industrial aesthetic with moody lighting to complement bold cocktails and sweeping views of the Chicago skyline. Its relaxed, approachable atmosphere reflects the overall hotel vibe, making Waydown an easy stop whether you’re out bar-hopping, heading to a concert, or catching a game.
Spacious enough to seat around 250 guests, with an additional intimate patio that holds a little more than a dozen people, Waydown aims to be both lively and comfortable. Pricing is competitive for the neighborhood, with cocktails starting around $12, a touch below typical downtown rates. The menu leans on globally inspired small plates that are designed to offset the drinks while remaining inventive and flavorful.
Located in the West Loop, the Ace Hotel Chicago isn’t positioned for walking access to the city’s primary tourist sites. That said, it’s a good option for visitors who know the city and want to explore a different neighborhood. The hotel’s location offers a fresh perspective on Chicago—close enough for a short, affordable ride to major attractions, but removed enough to immerse you in the West Loop’s distinctive dining and nightlife scene.
