Lufthansa A350 to Feature 24 Customizable Cabin Lighting Modes

Lufthansa has equipped its Airbus A350-900 aircraft with advanced LED cabin lighting that offers crew members 24 different lighting options to provide “the right type of light at the right time.”

The first of these A350-900s entered service on the Munich (MUC) to Delhi (DEL) route on Feb. 10. Lufthansa states it is “the first airline worldwide to use a range of different settings for the on-board lighting of the A350-900 which are designed to fit with the day and night-time biorhythms of their passengers.”

The new system can replicate different ambiances during flight, such as emulating a pleasant restaurant atmosphere during meal service, and tailoring light tones to support passenger comfort throughout the journey.

Dr. Reinhold Huber, who leads the airline’s customer experience development, said, “The well-being of our passengers is of particular importance to us. So it represents a real milestone for us that we can now achieve these improvements with this innovative lighting technology.”

Lufthansa is also planning to retrofit its Boeing 747-8 fleet with the same lighting technology to extend the benefits across more long-haul aircraft.

The system provides warm light for relaxation during rest periods and cooler light to stimulate passengers during more active phases. These lighting moods were developed in collaboration with lighting designers from Kardorff Ingenieure in Berlin and are informed by research in chronobiology and the known effects of day and night biorhythms on human physiology.

By adjusting color temperature, intensity and scene settings, the onboard lighting aims to reduce passenger fatigue, improve comfort on long flights and better align in-flight conditions with natural circadian rhythms. The flexible LED system gives cabin crew quick access to a variety of preset scenes that suit dining, resting, working or preparing for arrival, helping to create a more pleasant and supportive travel experience.

As airlines continue to invest in cabin environment improvements, lighting systems like this one are becoming an important tool for enhancing passenger comfort on long-haul routes. Lufthansa’s rollout on the A350-900 marks a notable step toward more personalized and health-conscious in-flight environments.
