A new 28-day cycling tour from Ride and Seek follows the route long associated with the Carthaginian army and its legendary commander, Hannibal. Called the Hannibal Expedition, the journey crosses the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Apennines as it moves through Spain, France and Italy.
“Hannibal takes in some of the finest cycling you could ever wish to find. Picture postcard views abound as we traverse some of the iconic climbs of the Grand Tours, roll through the vineyards and sample the delights of the diverse gastronomy to be found along the way,” said Sam Wood, co‑founder of Ride and Seek. The itinerary grew out of Wood’s experience working on the BBC documentary On Hannibal’s Trail.
The expedition is offered in two stages so riders can choose to book either leg or the full 28‑day route. The first stage sets out from Barcelona and follows the Pyrenees, then continues over to the Alpine approaches and on toward the Apennines. The second stage explores highlights across Italy, taking in historic towns, varied landscapes and well‑known climbs favored by amateur and experienced cyclists alike.
Daily rides combine challenging ascents with slower, scenic sections through vineyards, valleys and small villages, and the program includes support services, route guidance and opportunities to sample regional cuisine along the way. Accommodations and logistics are handled by the operator so participants can focus on riding and sightseeing.
Pricing for the Hannibal Expedition starts at approximately $5,700 for the basic package, with final cost depending on the selected stage, accommodations and any optional extras. The tour is aimed at fit cyclists who want an extended, culturally rich ride that follows a historic corridor through southern Europe.
Whether chosen for its historical connections, its iconic climbs or its varied scenery, the Hannibal Expedition offers a structured way to experience Mediterranean landscapes by bike while following a route inspired by one of antiquity’s most famous military journeys.
