Christmas market season is nearly upon us, and Hohenzollern Castle in southwest Germany is preparing to celebrate. On Nov. 28–30 and Dec. 5–7, the 11th-century fortress—ancestral seat of the Prussian royal family and the Hohenzollern princes—will sparkle with festive lights and showcase a variety of holiday crafts and gifts. Regular castle tours are suspended on market days, but visitors can still access the treasure room, two churches, and the cellar during the market.
If you prefer an earlier visit, plan for the weekend of Oct. 11–12 to enjoy autumn colors and crisp air while the castle courtyards fill with traditional music. Take in the dancing, sample regional specialties, or join a Royal Castle Stroll for exclusive entry to the royal chambers. The unguided stroll allows plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere, and private evening tours are available for those seeking a more intimate, after-hours experience.
