Six Senses to Open Its First European Resort: What to Expect

Six Senses will open its first European resort in Portugal’s Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, in spring 2015. Set on 19 acres of terraced vineyards and gardens, the 71-room property offers peaceful seclusion amid the sunlit valley, about 20 miles from Vila Real Airport and 88 miles from Oporto International Airport.

The resort’s dining program emphasizes Portuguese cuisine and local produce. An all-day restaurant and a specialty restaurant will feature regionally inspired dishes made with ingredients sourced from nearby farms and the resort’s own gardens. In addition to dining, guests can deepen their appreciation of the area’s vinicultural heritage at the on-site Wine Academy, which will cover the varieties and styles of one of the world’s oldest wine regions.

Wellness is a central focus of the property. The 24,000-square-foot Six Senses Spa includes 10 treatment rooms and will offer therapies inspired by local traditions, with some treatments incorporating wine-based elements. Spa amenities will include a heated indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool with a bar, and a fully equipped fitness center, providing a comprehensive wellness experience tailored to the Douro Valley setting.

Designed to blend with its natural surroundings, the resort aims to showcase the valley’s landscapes and cultural richness while delivering the Six Senses commitment to sustainability and guest wellbeing. Six Senses Douro Valley will join the company’s collection as its 12th property, expanding the brand’s footprint in luxury, experience-driven hospitality.
